Professor Lawrence M. Solan: Corpus Linguistics and Legal Analysis
Professor Lawrence M. Solan, linguist and lawyer from the Brooklyn Law School--and current Fellow at the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study in the Humanities in Bonn -- gave a guest lecture on "Corpus Linguistics as a Tool in Legal Analysis" on Monday, December 4th.

On November 30th, 2017, Pawel Sickinger gave a guest lecture in the Department of Romance Languages entitled "Mental Models, magic words and linguistic loops -- An embodied perspective on the interaction between concepts and linguistic items."
Guest Speaker Andreas Musolff: Framing Brexit
On Monday, November 20th, 2017, Andreas Musolff from the University of East Anglia and the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies joined us to give a guest lecture on "Framing Brexit as a rescue from the 'diseased' heart of Europe".
Career Options for Linguists
The first annual Forum Beruf Applied Linguistics took place on November 15th, 2017. Four former students of our MA Applied Linguistics program talked about where their studies took them and what career options are out there to explore.
Internship opportunity at the Kawa Training Center in Zanzibar
The Kawa Training Center in Zanzibar is offering a special opportunity for students to work at their fully certified and licensed vocational training center, supporting the team in setting up English language classes and teaching English as a foreign language. Volunteers should have a high level of English proficiency and should be willing to stay for about 3 months. Previous English teaching experience is appreciated.

Workshop at the University of Bochum Writing Centre
The University of Bochum Writing Centre is organizing a one-day 20th anniversary conference on Friday, September 29th, where BAEL's Dr. Stefanie Pohle will lead a workshop titled "Nutzung von Weblogs in der (Fach-)Lehre." She will share her experience with various feedback processes from her LaMa blog project.
10th Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing, Cologne
On September 30th, 2017, MA students Sarah Lapacz and Inken Mays and Dr. Stefanie Pohle will give a talk entitled "Who am I, who should I be? -- Three perspectives on peer tutoring in writing: Student, tutor, teacher" at the 10th Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing. The conference theme is "Out of Character? Enough is Enough: (Conflicts of) Role in Peer Tutoring" in Cologne.
BAEL in Moscow
Pawel Sickinger went to The Embodied and Situated Language Processing Conference in Moscow from September 9th-12th. He gave a presentation entitled, "Exploring the conceptual basis of multilingual language processing". He would like to thank the IAAK students and colleagues who provided the data he presented.
Academic Writing and Digital Media at elearn.nrw
On Friday, September 1st, 2017, BAEL staff member Dr. Stefanie Pohle and Dr. Daniel Spielmann of the University of Frankfurt a.M. led a session on "Blogs und ePortfolios: Wissenschaftliches Schreiben und digitale Medien in der Lehre" at the elearn.nrw conference in Essen.
Ethnologue Soon Available at the University of Bonn
The Ethnologue database will soon be available to students and staff of the University of Bonn. As of October, you will be able to browse and find out more about the languages of the world.
New street name - RCEP
Don't get lost when looking for the RCEP! As of 1st August, the street will no longer be called Walter-Flex-Straße, but Genscherallee. The RCEP is still in the exact same spot.
Research and Technology Workshop
Our annual Research Technology & Software Workshop, offered as part of our MA Applied Linguistics program, took place this past weekend. The participants learned about the advantages and drawbacks of 6 programs that can help with transcription, keylogging, qualitative data analysis, audiovisual recording and editing, and more. They were then given the chance to test these programs in a hands-on environment under the direction of Dr. Stefanie Pohle and 11 student experts.
New insights into (socio)linguistic aspects of African Englishes
Dr. Susanne Mohr has published two new articles: "Plural nouns in Tswana English" in World Englishes (early view) and, together with Dunlop Ochieng from the Department of Linguistics and Literary Studies at the Open University of Tanzania, "Language usage in everyday life and in education: current attitudes towards English in Tanzania" in English Today. The former article is concerned with non-standard plurals as found in the Tswana-component of the International Corpus of Learner English (ICLE). The latter paper is part of a collaborative project on contemporary language attitudes against the backdrop of the Education and Training Policy (Sera ya Elimu na Mafunzo) introduced in Tanzania in 2014.
BAEL at IprA in Belfast, Northern Ireland
The 15th International Pragmatics Conference (IprA) will take place in Belfast, Northern Ireland from July 16th-21st with two contributions from BAEL. Prof. Dr. Klaus P. Schneider will give a talk on "Re-thinking pragmatic variation: The case of service encounters from a modified variational pragmatics perspective." Friederike Sell, Katrin Renkwitz and Prof. Dr. Klaus P. Schneider will present their findings on "Using the functional and lexical levels of requests to measure pragmatic competence: The case of German school students in Canada." Linguistics Elective at the GAT
Congratulations to the students from our partner school, the Gymnasium zum Altenforst in Troisdorf (GAT), who received certificates for completing an elective course on English linguistics! This course was the product of a year-long cooperation between BAEL and Dr. Marja Meinl of the GAT.
Applied Linguistics in the Helping Professions
Klagenfurt University's Professor Dr. Eva-Maria Graf gave a guest lecture on Friday, July 7th from 10am-12pm in Room B (1.003) on "Coaching, Counseling, Psychotherapy, and Doctor-Patient Interaction: Applied Linguistic Insights into Helping Professions."
Carole Chaski, Ph.D. on Plagiarism and Authorship
On Wednesday, July 5th, Carole Chaski, Ph.D. of George Washington University presented a guest lecture on "Plagiarism and authorship analysis, the modern state of the art in methodology: At the intersection of linguistics, law and economy."
Panel on Urbanized African Sociolinguistics at ECAS7
At the 7th European Conference on African Studies in Basel, Switzerland (June 29th-July 1st), Susanne Mohr and her colleague Helene Steigertahl from Bayreuth University organized a panel on "Urbanized African Sociolinguistics -- Questioning Research Foci" with participants from all over the world. English in Tanzania
On June 13th, Dr. Susanne Mohr and her colleague Dr. Dunlop Ochieng from the Open University of Tanzania gave a talk entitled "Contemporary use of and attitudes towards English in multilingual Tanzania" at the 11th International Symposium on Bilingualism in Limerick, Ireland.
2016
Queen's prize
This year's Queen's Prize goes to our former student assistant Hannah Aengenvoort. She was awarded the prize for her BA thesis on "Assessing language attitudes towards Papua New Guinea's language policy in education", which she wrote under the supervision of Dr. Susanne Mohr and Professor Schneider. During the ceremonious opening of the academic year she received her honorary certificate from Bonn University's president. Congratulations to Hannah!
Outreach: project week with secondary school students
For one of our annual outreach activities, we had a group of 10 secondary school students from the CJD Königswinter over to spend a week with us. They gained some insight into the field of pragmatics and carried out their own empirical studies. The week finished off with them presenting their results - we are truly impressed with their projects!

BAEL's Pawel Sickinger gave a talk about Politeness and Language on April 18th, 2016 at Kinderuni, a project of the University of Bonn dedicated to children aged between 8 and 13 years.

BAEL proudly announces the GAL Research School for Methods in Empirical Pragmatics (MeEP), a three-day summer school for postgraduate students. The MeEP will take place from 12th-14th September 2016 and feature extensive workshops lead by internationally renowned linguists, namely Anne Barron, Michael Haugh, John Kirk and Miriam Locher.

ACiME conference 2015
From 12-14th September 2015, the ACiME team will hold a conference on "Academic Communication in Multimedia Environment" in Sofia, Bulgaria and it is still possible to submit abstracts (deadline: 15th March). English studies at "Hochschultage 2015"
At the "Hochschultage" at Bonn University, the IAAK will present its study programs to prospective new students. On Tuesday, 24.02.2015, four brief presentations will cover different aspects of English studies, including a talk on Applied Linguistics by Pawel Sickinger. The presentations start at 3pm at lecture hall 9 in the university's main building.

Congratulations to our researcher Pawel Sickinger! The University of Bonn has published an article about his dissertation project (article in German). Workshop "Quantitative Methods"
On Friday, 13th and Saturday, 14th December 2013, a statistics workshop for 2nd year MA Applied Linguistics students will take place at the English Department. However, there are still about 12 additional slots left for 1st year MA and 3rd year BA students who want to gain an insight into statistics in the context of empirical research studies in linguistics.

BAEL presentation at the English Profile Seminar in Cambridge
Bonn Applied English Linguistics gave a presentation at the English Profile seminar no. 14 in Cambridge, talking about the importance of pragmatic competence and methods for assessing it ins learners. We also presented the BAEL research project PRA.PRO including some sample results from previous studies.

BAEL presentation at Dies Academicus
English is a universal means of communication in multi-national organisations where it is used by many non-native speakers. Even though their overall competence is outstanding, communicative challenges may still arise. These challenges may be of high costs to the organisations.
At this semester's Dies Academicus (December 5, 2012) we presented our new research project "Business English in International Organisations" (BEIO). The talk was held by Terry Haggerty, SAP manager in the UK and the initiator of this project, together with Susanne Strubel-Burgdorf and Katharina Weber, researchers from Bonn Applied English Linguistics.

BAEL presentation at Dies Academicus
When it comes to writing emails to a professor, students often hesitate. Which form of greeting is appropriate and which is too formal? And how do the recipients really perceive these emails?
We will present results from our research project "Emerging E-mail Etiquette" (EEE) at this semester's Dies Academicus, December 7, 2011. The presentation takes place in HS II of the Hauptgebäude from 11 - 12 o'clock (c.t.).

Two PhD scholarships at Leuphana Universität Lüneburg
Anne Barron, Professor of English Linguistics at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg and former assistant professor at BAEL, is looking for two PhD students in the area of interlanguage pragmatics and variational pragmatics.
Applicants are required to have a Master's degree or equivalent (e.g. Magister) in English Studies, linguistics or a related field, with an above-average grade.

The lecture period is coming to an end, and one last time BAEL and Linguistisches Forum present a guest lecture in the lecture series "Sprachwelten". Recent event: lecture series "Linguistisches Forum"
This winter semester’s lecture series “Linguistisches Forum” focused on empirical methods in linguistics. BAEL staff members presented their own as well as the chair’s research projects. As usual the lectures were open to all: students, lecturers and visitors alike.
Outreach at BAEL
A final presentation just marked the end of this year's school project for five pupils from the Christophorus School (CJD) in Königswinter. The project is part of the cooperation between the IAAK and CJD, and was initiated by BAEL.

SPICE-Ireland now available
We are now in possession of the SPICE-Ireland corpus (Systems of Pragmatic annotation for the spoken component of ICE-Ireland), which provides pragmatic and discourse annotation to the spoken part of ICE-Ireland.

Dies Academicus May 2010 - Report
The Dies Academicus on May 19th has seen another open house at the RCEP, but this time around with a slightly different setup. BAEL presented ongoing projects and let visitors have a hand at some authentic linguistic research work.
2009
Dies Academicus Winter semester 2009/10
This semester, BAEL's workshop in the Research Centre for Empirical Pragmatics (RCEP) on Dies Academicus was only one part of a larger series of events.
The day started with the screening of the US documentary "The Linguists", which attracted many interested visitors despite the early hour.
Guest lecture by Miriam Locher
In the course of the "Linguistics and everyday life" lecture series of Bonn Applied English Linguistics, Miriam A. Locher (University of Basel) gave the first lecture on December 1, 2009, titled "'Come on, I am not a moron' - Theorising impoliteness online" (HS XVII, 10-12).
After a concise overview on previous research in the field of politeness and relational work in general, Professor Locher defined the key concepts of the research area that have emerged from it and provided some concrete examples for their representation in the context of internet-based communication.
"Multikulti-Knigge" with Prof. Schneider on Australian radio
Prof. Schneider has been featured in an ongoing series on intercultural communication by Australian radio station SBS.
The final part is now online, closing the series with some anecdotal accounts.
Master’s Programme in English Linguistics

11th International Pragmatics Conference (IPRA)
Professor Schneider gave two talks at the 11th International Pragmatics Conference in Melbourne, Australia.
Together with Anne Barron he presented the opening talk "Cultural Scripts and politic behaviour across varieties of English" to the panel Im/politeness across Englishes, convened by Derek Bousfield and Michael Haugh.

After two successful open days during the last year, the Research Centre for Empirical Pragmatics has continued its recent tradition of inviting students to learn about its inner workings.

May 2009 - Dies Academicus: open house at the RCEP
On May 27, 10 a.m., the BAEL-Team once again welcomed visitors at the Research Centre for Empirical Pragmatics (RCEP). In the course of the Dies Academicus we presented group projects where visitors could actively explore empirical research methods used in applied linguistics.

October 2008 - ISLE 2008
Professor Schneider (with Wolfram Bublitz, Anita Fetzer and Neal R. Norrick) held the workshop "Spoken English in contexts: Parameters and interfaces." at ISLE 2008: The First Triennial Conference of the International Society for the Linguistics of English. The conference took place at the University of Freiburg, Germany, 8-11 October 2008.
September 2008 - 10 years of Applied English Linguistics at Bonn University
Ten years ago, the English Department of Bonn University decided to convert a chair in English Literature into a chair in Applied English Linguistics.
At that time, there were seven professors of literature in the department, but only one professor of modern linguistics and one professor of historical linguistics and medieval literature. On the retirement of Professor Dr. Rainer Lengeler, it was decided to turn his chair into the chair of applied linguistics.
The holder of this new chair was expected to participate in all programmes offered by the department at the time. In particular, the new professor was expected to act as head of the programme “English and Translating”, to teach linguistics in the interdisciplinary North American Studies Programme, and to conduct research into varieties of English.
The new chair in Applied English Linguistics was offered to Prof. Dr. Klaus P. Schneider, then lecturer at University College Dublin, Ireland. In September 1998, Professor Schneider started working at Bonn University.

Professor Schneider presented the paper “‘Same, but different’: Miscommunication between native speakers of the same language.” at AILA 2008: The 15th World Congress of Applied Linguistics, University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, 24-29 August 2008.

The book "Variational Pragmatics: A Focus on Regional Varieties in Pluricentric Languages", edited by Professor Schneider and Dr. Anne Barron, is now available in John Benjamins' "Pragmatics & Beyond New Series".

Professor Schneider and Dr. Anne Barron will chair the themed panel “Pragmatic variation: The interplay of micro-social and macro-social factors.” at the 17th Sociolinguistics Symposium, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands, 3-5 April 2008.

On Thursday, 20 December 2007, Professor Anne-Marie Simon-Vandenbergen (University of Ghent, Belgium), gave a lecture titled "Using the ICE-GB for a semantic-pragmatic study of English adverbs".
October 2007 - Spotlight on thesis of Lisanna Görtz
Lisanna's thesis, "Changes in the Justificatory Rhetoric of George W. Bush in the Course of the Iraq conflict 2002-2004", did not only earn her the perfect grade, but media attention as well.
The german newspaper Rheinischer Merkur summarised her findings in an article titled "Fakten gegen ein Klischee", which appeared in the section "Wissenschaft und Praxis" on October 25, 2007.
October 2007 - DGFF-Kongress in Giessen
Professor Schneider presented an invited paper “Teaching intercultural competence and pragmatic variation.” in the section “Educational Linguistics”, organised by Friederike Klippel and Joybrato Mukherjee.
The DGFF-Kongress 2007 took place at the University of Giessen, Germany.
