Sections & speakers

All of the speakers selected for the MeEP 2016 are experts in their respective fields and were happy to share their expertise with our participants:

  • In section 1, Anne Barron focused on empirical methods in second language pragmatics with a particular focus on the possibilities which technology offers in circumventing existing obstacles in research and teaching. For more information on her work, take a look at her website here.
  • Michael Haugh's approach, in section 2, was interactional pragmatics, i.e. an approach to pragmatics informed by research and methods in ethnomethodological conversation analysis. The focus was on the granularity of social action ascription in talk-in-interaction. You can find out more about his work here.
  • Section 3 was led by Miriam Locher. She talked about interpersonal pragmatics and advice in medical contexts by focusing on computer-mediated discourse. You can find her website at the University of Basel here.
  • In section 4, John M. Kirk discussed pragmatic annotation in corpora, with particular reference to discourse features. If you would like to know more about his work, visit his website here.

Schedule

Sections 1 and 2 (Anne Barron + Michael Haugh) as well as sections 3 and 4 (Miriam Locher + John Kirk) ran in parallel. This way, our participants had the chance to focus on the topics that were most relevant to them and to gain a deep insight into the respective subject matter.

During the input lectures, the presenters were video-recorded. You can find the webcasts here.
