Former chair in Applied English Linguistics, Department of English, American and Celtic Studies, University of Bonn, Germany

Studied English, Russian and Education in Marburg, Edinburgh and Moscow; teaching degree, Ph.D. and post-doctoral degree from the University of Marburg; taught at the universities of Marburg, Hamburg and Rostock and at University College Dublin

Current research interests include variational pragmatics, pragmatic competence, perceptions of (im)politeness and (in)appropriateness, metadiscourse, practices in academic communication, language and the law, and evaluative morphology

On-going research projects include The Pragmatics of Namibian English (in cooperation with Anne Schröder, University of Bielefeld), Pragmatic Profiling, Business English in International Organisations (funded by Terry Haggerty, London)

Member of the editorial board of the Journal of Pragmatics; series co-editor of the Handbooks of Pragmatics for De Gruyter Mouton (Berlin and Boston); co-editor of the book series Language in Cultural Contexts for V&R unipress/Bonn University Press (Göttingen); Member of the Irish English Research Network
