statistics workshop by prof. dr. martin schweinberger (19.01.2023) Within the Intercultural Communication course (M.A.), Prof. Dr. Martin Schweinberger (The University of Queensland, The Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø) is going to hold an introductory statistics workshop titled "An introduction to conditional inference trees in R" on Thursday, January 19, 2023.

Due to their relatively easy implementation, tree-based methods have surged in prominence in the language science over the past decade. Tree-based models have become an essential multivariate statistical method in the tool box of contemporary corpus-based analyses of language.
This workshop provides and introduction to conditional inference trees, how they work, and how they can be implemented in R. Importantly, we will also discuss the underlying conceptual basis of tree-based models and explore their strengths and weaknesses in addition to focusing on their implementation.

Aims
By the end of this workshop, you will:
• Have a practical sense of the underlying principles of tree-based models
• Be able to apply conditional inference trees to tabular data
• Be aware of their limitations and advantages

Prerequisites
The course does not require in-depth knowledge of R but basic working knowledge of R and how to work in/with RStudio are certainly an advantage. In preparation of the workshop, please carefully read this tutorial

Bring your own data
While we will be working with a sample data set, you are invited to bring your own data. Materials and links to documents will be made available later down the line.

Registration
Participation is free but spots are limited. Please register until Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at lets[at]uni-bonn.de. Further information will be provided in due time.
