forum beruf applied linguistics 2017
Our first annual Forum Beruf Applied Linguistics took place on November 15th, 2017. Four of our former students talked about where their studies took them and what career options are out there to explore.
Katharina Weber, trainee of the editorial team of the General-Anzeiger in Bonn
Katharina Weber, a trainee of the editorial team of the General-Anzeiger in Bonn, told us about her long journey, the unusual amount of internships she did, and the hard work that is required to become a journalist. She especially highlighted the importance of gaining work experience during the M.A. programme, e.g. by freelance work, internships and networking.
Alwina Bach is a trainee in the online marketing department of real.digital in Cologne. She described the many different tasks she has in this job and how her studies in Applied Linguistics have helped her in approaching these new challenges. The training in empirical research, which she received during the M.A. programme, helped her in planning new projects and analyzing collected data in her new job.
Samantha Kent, who is working as a research assistant at the Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics (FKIE), informed us about how her internship turned into a job, and how doing research during the M.A. programme has helped her in her job now. She works in a field which deals with automated text analysis and she describes it as an academic setting, where she is encouraged to attend conferences.
Michelle Kühnel, editor for distance learning material at the Apollon Hochschule in Bremen, joined us via Skype. She told us how she is applying her knowledge of Foreign Language Learning and Foreign Language teaching to her job in creating learning materials. Part of her work consists of eBook and audiobook production and development, which requires skills such as quality awareness and affinity for digital media.
After the talks, the students had the possibility to ask questions in an open discussion round. The official part of the evening was followed by a reception where the students and alumni were able to exchange experiences and network in a relaxed atmosphere.
We want to thank all of our speakers for the interesting and informative talks and wish them good luck for their career!
